A Marathon with a Mission

Jessica Hooke, a dedicated runner, reflects on her journey through downtown Memphis during the St. Jude Memphis Marathon. This event holds a deep personal significance for her as she raises funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the sole National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center for children. Having lived in Memphis before moving to Orlando, Jessica’s connection to the cause is unwavering, inspired by survivor stories and her determination to help more children share their victories.

Returning for a Noble Cause

Participating in her third St. Jude Marathon, Jessica previously ran in 2019 and virtually in 2020 despite recovering from a hip problem. This year, she joins thousands of runners, including members of the National Black Marathoners’ Association, in this heartwarming cause.

Uniting the World for St. Jude

In 2023, the St. Jude Memphis Marathon attracted 17,000 in-person participants and 3,000 virtual runners from all 50 states and 72 countries. The event continues to grow, raising funds for pediatric cancer research and care. Since its inception two decades ago, the marathon has raised over $100 million, evolving from a local fundraiser to an international movement.

Breaking Fundraising Records

According to ALSAC CEO Richard Shadyac Jr., this year’s marathon is set to surpass its $9 million fundraising goal, potentially reaching $12.5 million and outdoing the 2019 record of $12.3 million. Last year’s total was $7.5 million with 15,000 participants.

A Celebratory Course

The marathon began at B.B. King Boulevard, weaving through the St. Jude campus and downtown Memphis before concluding at AutoZone Park. Participants were cheered on by supportive spectators, making the event a highlight for both the city and the hospital. Mayor Jim Strickland praised the event for its dual impact: raising millions for St. Jude and boosting Memphis’s economy through tourism.
