Overview of the Borneo Ultra Trail Marathon

The Borneo Ultra Trail Marathon (BUTM) is making its comeback in Kiulu, located on the scenic foothills of Mount Kinabalu, after a one-year hiatus. This extreme marathon, supported by the Sabah Tourism Board, will take place from March 19-20, attracting marathon enthusiasts from across the globe.

Event Highlights

Rustic Trails and Scenic Routes

Participants will race through the charming Kiulu villages and forested trails, experiencing the natural beauty of Sabah’s eco-adventure destination. The event’s proximity to Sabah’s state capital makes it an accessible yet thrilling challenge for participants.

Four Distance Categories

The marathon offers four distance options to cater to different levels of endurance:

  1. 100km
  2. 50km
  3. 30km
  4. 9km

Each category promises a unique experience through Kiulu’s rugged terrain.

Safety Measures and Participation

Strict SOP and Covid-19 Testing

To ensure participant safety, strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) will be enforced. All runners will undergo Covid-19 testing, and participation is limited to 200 individuals per category to maintain safe conditions.

International and Local Participation

So far, 400 runners have registered, including 25 international participants, many of whom are expatriates residing in Malaysia. In 2020, before the pandemic, the event saw 1,600 local and international marathoners.

Tourism and Community Impact

Promoting Sabah’s Eco-Tourism

Sabah Tourism Board chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai emphasized the event’s importance as more than just a sporting competition. “The BUTM is a gateway for participants to explore Sabah’s rural destinations while enjoying outdoor sporting activities,” he said.

Opportunities for Local Villages

Kiulu’s commitment to community-based tourism offers participants the chance to stay in local homestays, experience the culture, and explore the region’s rivers, forests, and mountains. This boosts local businesses and fosters cultural exchange.

Conclusion

The return of the Borneo Ultra Trail Marathon not only excites extreme marathon enthusiasts but also serves as a significant boost for Sabah’s tourism and community-based initiatives. With its scenic trails, strict safety measures, and cultural richness, the event promises an unforgettable experience for participants and spectators alike.
